Big Tech Races to Quell Backlash Against AI Data Centers

Big technology companies are building large facilities called data centers to support artificial intelligence.

Many people worry these facilities could use too much electricity and water, create noise or raise household bills.

Some people also worry that artificial intelligence could eliminate jobs or harm society.

In Georgia, protesters demonstrated while OpenAI held a meeting about a planned data center.

OpenAI offered information, jobs links, community funding and coding credits.

Meta announced a $1 billion fund for communities with its data centers and promised to restore more water than it uses by 2030.

Microsoft said companies need to work more openly with local communities and ended some confidentiality agreements with local governments.

Several companies also promised to pay for the electricity their facilities use.

Critics say public relations efforts are not enough if companies continue opposing restrictions on data-center construction.
