Bihar's Makhana Export to Canada Boosts Farmers' Income
Bihar in India grows a snack called Makhana, also known as fox nuts.
Farmers in the state want to sell more of it abroad.
In July, a big shipment of flavored Makhana left India for Canada.
The nuts were packed by a company called Nutrivin Agro and shipped from the Mundra Port.
Because the nuts were processed and branded, farmers can now earn more than half again as much money as before.
The government says this shows how adding value to food can help farmers and make Indian products more popular worldwide.
First sea shipment of flavored Makhana from Bihar to Canada launched on July 29.
Shipment included 7 metric tonnes in two containers via Mundra Port to ZKV Foods.
Farmers in Bihar earn over 50% higher returns through value‑added processing.
Nutrivin Agro Private Limited processed and packaged the product to international standards.
APEDA and stakeholders aim to position Bihar as a leading agri‑export hub.
