Perdue Says US Taiwan Policy Remains Unchanged After Xi Visit

US officials say the country’s policy toward Taiwan has not changed after Xi Jinping visited Washington.

The United States says it does not support Taiwan becoming formally independent.

It also says China should not use force or pressure to change the situation.

China considers Taiwan part of its territory.

Xi asked Donald Trump to more clearly oppose Taiwan independence.

David Perdue said this request did not cause the United States to stop supporting Taiwan’s defense.

The United States has approved billions of dollars in weapons sales to Taiwan.

Taiwan says it wants those weapons delivered soon.

The two sides also disagree about how much Trump and Xi discussed Taiwan during their meeting.
