Indian Bank Credit Growth Hits Decade High in August

Indian banks are lending much more money than they did last year.

Bank lending grew by 19.1% in August 2026.

Deposits, or money kept in banks, also grew quickly.

This happened partly because banks received more foreign money and had extra funds available.

Companies borrowed strongly, and people continued borrowing for purchases such as vehicles.

Credit card borrowing did not grow as quickly.

Experts think lending may remain strong for much of 2026.

However, they expect growth to slow later because the comparison with last year will become harder and the extra money will be absorbed by the economy.
