IndiGo Crisis: Flight Cancellations, Refunds, and Regulatory Scrutiny
IndiGo, a big airline in India, is having a lot of problems with flights being canceled and delayed.
This is because they didn't prepare well for new rules about how much pilots can work.
The airline's board, which includes important people, is being questioned about why they didn't do more to prevent this crisis.
The board met and set up a special team to handle the problem, but some people are asking if they should have done more earlier.
The government's aviation agency, DGCA, is also investigating what went wrong and has given IndiGo some extra time to fix things.
Passengers are very upset and are complaining about the cancellations and delays.
The airline is trying to fix the problems and says they are making progress.
The government has set price limits on tickets to help, but some people think these limits are not being followed.
Many passengers had to find other ways to travel, like taking buses or trains, and some had to pay a lot more money for new tickets.
Some people are also upset because their luggage is missing, and the airline is trying to return it.
The situation is causing a lot of trouble for people who are traveling, especially during the busy wedding season.
IndiGo has processed refunds for over 5.8 lakh bookings between 1-7 December, totaling ₹569.6 crore, with a total of 9.5 lakh refunds processed between 21 November to 7 December, amounting to ₹827 crore.
IndiGo has returned about 4,500 bags to passengers out of a total of 9,000 bags, with the remaining expected to be delivered within the next 36 hours.
IndiGo plans to operate 1,802 flights on Monday, 8 December to 137 of its 138 destinations, alongside around 500 cancellations.
An open letter from an IndiGo employee highlights systemic failures and management issues, stating that the crisis was foreseeable and warnings were ignored.
IndiGo's stock has fallen due to the operational crisis and concerns over future earnings, with Morgan Stanley cutting FY27 and FY28 earnings estimates by 20%.
