Judge Blocks Pentagon Blacklisting of Anthropic Over AI Safety

A judge stopped the Pentagon from blacklisting an AI company called Anthropic.

The Pentagon had labeled Anthropic a possible national security supply-chain risk.

This label could keep the company from receiving some military contracts.

The dispute began because Anthropic would not allow its Claude AI to be used for some surveillance or autonomous weapons.

Anthropic says AI is not reliable enough for autonomous weapons and that domestic surveillance could violate people’s rights.

The government says companies should not be able to limit military operations through contract restrictions.

The judge said the Pentagon’s decision was illegal and baseless.

Anthropic still has another lawsuit about a separate designation that could affect civilian government contracts.
