Pope Names Successor for Embattled New Orleans Archbishop
The Pope has chosen a new leader for the Catholic Church in New Orleans, Bishop James Checchio.
This happened after the church agreed to pay $230 million to people who were hurt by clergy sexual abuse.
The previous leader, Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond, is 75 and ready to retire.
Bishop Checchio, who used to work in Metuchen, New Jersey, will take over from Aymond when he retires.
The money from the settlement will go to the survivors of the abuse.
Survivors will vote on whether or not they approve of the revised settlement, potentially starting payments next year.
Pope Leo XIV appointed Bishop James Checchio as the next Archbishop of New Orleans.
The appointment comes after the archdiocese agreed to a $230 million settlement.
The settlement resolves claims of clergy sexual abuse.
