Punjab Prison Buprenorphine Use Surges, Raising Addiction Concerns

Punjab uses medicines called buprenorphine and naloxone to help people stop using stronger opioids such as heroin.

The medicines are meant to be given with medical care and counselling.

But the number of these pills supplied to prisons has risen sharply, and many more inmates are registered for treatment.

The High Court has asked the government to explain what is happening.

Some experts worry that pills may be misused or traded in prison, especially when there are too few doctors and counsellors.

Others say the medicine is safer than heroin and can reduce the danger of overdose and infections.

They also say that people leaving prison may return to stronger drugs without continued treatment.

The disagreement is about how to provide treatment safely, not whether prison conditions and addiction need attention.
