SEBI Overhauls Mutual Fund Regulations
SEBI, the organization that oversees the stock market in India, made big changes to how mutual funds work.
They decided to lower the fees that mutual funds can charge, which are called expense ratios.
These fees are what mutual funds take from your investment to cover their costs.
SEBI also made the rules clearer and easier to understand.
They separated the basic fees (called the Base Expense Ratio) from other costs like taxes and charges.
This way, investors can see exactly what they're paying for.
SEBI also reduced the maximum fees for certain types of funds, like index funds and funds that invest in other funds.
They also made changes to how stockbrokers operate, making the rules simpler and more up-to-date.
The goal is to make mutual funds cheaper and more transparent, so more people can invest in them.
The Union government is also planning to introduce a new law called the Securities Markets Code Bill, which will replace three old laws related to the stock market.
This new law aims to make the rules more modern and better for protecting investors.
However, some people are worried that this new law might make SEBI less independent and could favor big companies over smaller investors.
SEBI overhauled mutual fund regulations on 17 December 2025, introducing a revised expense ratio framework and capping brokerage charges.
Statutory levies like GST, STT, CTT, and stamp duty are now excluded from mutual fund expense ratio limits.
Brokerage limits were revised to 6 bps for cash market transactions and 2 bps for derivatives.
The new SEBI (Mutual Funds) Regulations, 2026, reduced the regulation document by 44% in pages and 54% in word count.
SEBI also approved replacing the three-decade-old Sebi (Stock Brokers) Regulations, 1992 with the Sebi (Stock Brokers) Regulations, 2025.
