Spain confirms first human transmission of mpox clade 1b outside Africa
Spain has reported the first case of mpox clade 1b spreading from person to person outside of Africa.
A 49-year-old man in Madrid got sick with mpox, even though he had been vaccinated twice and hadn't traveled to places where mpox is common.
He got it from sexual contact with partners who also hadn't traveled.
This is different from other cases because usually, people get mpox by traveling to Africa or being near someone who did.
Health officials are worried and want people to be careful, especially those who might be more at risk, like people with HIV or many sexual partners.
There have been many new cases and some deaths around the world recently.
Spain reports the first human-to-human transmission of mpox clade 1b outside Africa.
A 49-year-old man in Madrid tested positive for mpox clade 1b after sexual contact with local partners.
The patient had received two doses of the Imvanex vaccine and had no travel history to endemic regions.
Previous cases outside Africa were linked to travel or contact with travelers from endemic regions.
Health officials urge precautions, especially for vulnerable groups like people living with HIV and men who have sex with men.
