COCOMI flags poor IDP home conditions in Manipur
A team from COCOMI, along with IDPs, visited a village in Manipur where displaced families are set to return.
They found that many homes are in very bad condition because they have been abandoned for over two years.
The team leader, Khuraijam Athouba, said the government's plan to give the same amount of money to fix all homes is not fair because some homes need just small repairs while others need to be completely rebuilt.
He asked the government to check each home individually and also to help the villagers find ways to make a living again.
One IDP woman was happy that the team visited because now someone has seen their difficult situation.
COCOMI and IDPs inspected homes in Leimaram Waroiching Leikai, finding many in deplorable condition after two-and-a-half years of abandonment.
Khuraijam Athouba criticized the government's uniform compensation plan, advocating for individual assessments of each damaged home.
The team submitted suggestions to the government, emphasizing the need for house-specific evaluations and repairs.
Athouba urged the government to create a livelihood policy for returning IDPs, involving IDPs and civil society in the process.
An IDP woman, Lairen Tombi, expressed gratitude for the visit, highlighting the importance of firsthand assessments.
