Amazon reinstates arbitration clause restricting customer class-action lawsuits

Amazon reinstates arbitration clause restricting customer class-action lawsuits

When you shop at Amazon, you agree to its rules, called conditions of use.

Amazon just added a new rule to those conditions.

The rule says that if customers feel Amazon did something wrong, they usually can't join together in a big group to sue the company in court.

Instead, most problems would be settled through arbitration, where a private person helps both sides work things out.

People can still go to small claims court for smaller problems.

Amazon says this rule helps customers solve problems faster and with less money spent.

A few years ago, Amazon had a similar rule but took it away after arguments about its Alexa voice assistant.

Some lawyers think the new rule might not hold up, because a judge could block it.

Amazon says customers agree to the rule just by continuing to use its services.

Either way, only a court can decide for sure what the rule really means.
