AP Chambers seeks end to market levy collection
The Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry Federation (AP Chambers) has asked the government to stop certain agricultural market committees (AMCs) from collecting a market fee in the wrong way.
The AMCs are charging a fee on goods bought outside their market area, which is not allowed by law.
This is causing problems for small and medium traders.
The AP Chambers wants the government to make sure the fee is only collected when goods are bought or sold within the market area and to set up a simple way for traders to complain if this rule is not followed.
They hope this will make things clearer and fairer for everyone involved in selling and buying agricultural products.
AP Chambers President Potluri Bhaskara Rao submitted a representation to the minister for agriculture, cooperation, and marketing seeking intervention against the unlawful collection of market levy by certain AMCs.
Some AMCs are collecting market fees on agricultural commodities purchased outside their notified market area, including inter-district and inter-state purchases.
The AP Agricultural Produce and Livestock Markets Act, 1966, states that market fee is only leviable when a sale or purchase takes place within the notified market area.
The practice is causing financial burden, confusion, and harassment, particularly for small and medium traders, processors, and agri-businesses.
AP Chambers requested clear instructions to all AMCs to prevent the collection of levy on commodities purchased outside their jurisdiction and to set up a simple grievance redressal mechanism.
