UK Reaffirms Neutral Stance on Kashmir
The UK government recently had a discussion in their parliament about Kashmir.
They said that the issue of Kashmir should be solved by India and Pakistan, considering what the people of Kashmir want.
This is the UK's long-standing position.
A minister named Hamish Falconer said that Kashmir is a very sensitive issue between India and Pakistan, and it's important for them to talk and respect human rights.
Some other politicians mentioned that there are terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, and the UK should ask Pakistan to close them.
Another former leader, Jeremy Corbyn, suggested that the United Nations should get involved, but the UK government said that India and Pakistan should talk to each other instead.
The UK government reaffirmed its long-standing policy that Kashmir is an issue for India and Pakistan to resolve based on the wishes of the Kashmiris.
The debate was initiated by Labour MP Imran Hussain and took place in Westminster Hall, Houses of Parliament, London.
Hamish Falconer, minister in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), presented the UK's official stance.
Labour MP Barry Gardiner highlighted cross-border terrorism and called on the UK to press Pakistan to close terrorist camps.
Former prime minister Jeremy Corbyn advocated for UN intervention, but the UK government reiterated its support for bilateral dialogue.
