France's public debt set to reach highest level since 1978

France's public debt set to reach highest level since 1978

France is borrowing more money because it is spending more than it collects.

This has caused the country’s debt to grow very large.

The debt could reach 119.3% of the size of France’s economy in 2026.

It could rise further to 121.7% in 2027.

These levels would be the highest France has seen since 1978.

European Union rules say countries should generally keep their yearly deficit below 3% of their economy.

France’s deficit is expected to be about 5.4% this year.

The government wants to reduce spending by €54 billion in 2027.

Some lawmakers warn that cuts could hurt poorer people most, while the fiscal watchdog says France can still change course.
