India Passenger Vehicle Exports Fall Despite Record Domestic August Dispatches
Indian car companies sent fewer passenger vehicles to other countries in August 2026.
Exports fell 17% compared with August 2025.
At the same time, companies sent a record number of passenger vehicles to dealers in India.
Domestic dispatches rose 36.5% as manufacturers prepared for the festive season.
Utility vehicle exports grew, but passenger car and van exports declined.
Production also increased because companies expected stronger sales in India.
SIAM said demand was helped by consumer confidence, rural demand and better financing conditions.
ICRA said people replacing older vehicles were also supporting demand.
However, ICRA expects the industry’s growth to slow during the second half of FY27.
Passenger vehicle exports fell 17% year-on-year to 68,230 units in August 2026.
Domestic passenger vehicle dispatches rose 36.5% to a record 439,309 units.
Passenger car exports dropped 51.5%, while utility vehicle exports increased 23.7%.
Overall passenger vehicle production climbed 25.7% to 454,266 units during the month.
SIAM cited consumer confidence, rural demand and improving financing, while ICRA expects growth to moderate in the second half of FY27.

SIAM said the automobile industry is in a robust growth phase, supported by consumer confidence, resilient rural demand and improving financing conditions.
Cautious Growth Outlook
ICRA said the strong figures were partly aided by a favourable base and expects automobile-sector growth to be much softer in the second half of FY27.
Main demand drivers
Robust Domestic Growth
SIAM emphasized healthy underlying demand and expected the festive season to provide an additional boost to vehicle sales.
Cautious Growth Outlook
ICRA said demand also reflects a replacement cycle, with consumers replacing vehicles bought five to seven years ago, rather than only the effect of earlier GST-related sentiment.
