India’s Banks Face CEO Shortage Despite Global Leadership Success

India’s Banks Face CEO Shortage Despite Global Leadership Success

India has many talented bankers, but it does not have enough people ready to run its biggest banks.

Several banks are looking for new chief executives at the same time.

This means the same small group of candidates may be considered for many jobs.

HDFC Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank have sent possible names to the Reserve Bank of India.

The regulator must approve the leaders of private banks.

Candidates also have to meet rules about age, time in office and governance.

Some banks have not trained possible successors early enough.

Talented people have also moved to fintech companies, other financial firms or jobs abroad.

By contrast, some large global banks publicly prepare several possible successors.

Investors may worry more when a bank does not have a clear leadership plan.
