Gondhal Director Responds to Anurag Kashyap’s Oscar Criticism
Gondhal was chosen to represent India at the 99th Academy Awards.
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap questioned whether it had enough international exposure.
He said films should first appear at overseas festivals or secure American distribution.
Gondhal director Santosh Davakhar replied that Kashyap had told him he had not seen or heard of the film.
Davakhar asked people to watch the movie before judging it.
Gondhal is a Marathi thriller about intrigue and murder during a traditional ceremony.
It was made by a debut filmmaker from outside the film industry.
The movie is expected to return to theatres before its Oscar campaign.

Davakhar said Kashyap told him on April 26 that he had not heard of or watched Gondhal.
Kashyap argued that films seeking Oscar success need international festival exposure or American distribution.
He cited The Lunchbox and All We Imagine as Light as films he believed should previously have been selected.
Gondhal, a Marathi psychological thriller, won Davakhar the Silver Peacock for Best Director at IFFI 2025 and is planned for theatrical re-release.
