India’s AI Expansion Faces Growing Power and Infrastructure Demands

AI programs run on large computers housed in data centres.

These computers need a lot of electricity and produce substantial heat.

They also need cooling systems, water management, and strong internet connections.

India’s data-centre capacity has already grown sharply since 2020.

The Central Electricity Authority says data-centre power demand could reach 17 gigawatts by 2031-32.

The article says planning should begin before power and other infrastructure become bottlenecks.

A proposed AI infrastructure policy would help coordinate electricity, renewable energy, transmission, water, and connectivity.

As more people gain access to computing through the IndiaAI Mission, the need for this physical infrastructure could increase.
