Tunnel Breakthrough Advances Kottavalasa-Koraput Rail Doubling Project
A railway project in Odisha has reached an important step: workers joined the two ends of a tunnel.
The tunnel is 829 metres long and is between Borra Guhalu and Karakavalasa stations.
The railway says the work met its alignment target.
The tunnel is part of a much larger plan to add a second track along the Kottavalasa-Koraput route.
That project covers 189 kilometres and is estimated to cost Rs 3,580 crore.
It is intended to help carry more goods and improve transportation.
When the doubling work is complete, the railway says passenger and freight trains should be able to move more smoothly.
The project is expected to benefit districts in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
East Coast Railway achieved a breakthrough on Tunnel No. 41-41A on October 1.
The 829-metre tunnel lies between Borra Guhalu and Karakavalasa stations.
The tunnel has a horseshoe shape, includes a curve of up to 8 degrees, and achieved 100% alignment accuracy.
The wider Kottavalasa-Koraput doubling project covers 189 km and is estimated to cost Rs 3,580 crore.
East Coast Railway says the completed project will increase capacity and improve passenger and freight train movement.
