India Seeks Full Arctic Council Membership, Polar Ambassador

India Seeks Full Arctic Council Membership, Polar Ambassador

The Arctic is the freezing cold region around the North Pole.

A group of important people in India called the Parliamentary Committee on External Affairs wants India to play a bigger part there.

The committee says India should send a special helper called a Polar Ambassador.

It also wants India to become a full member of the Arctic Council, a club of countries that talk about the Arctic.

Right now, India is only a watcher and cannot vote on decisions.

The Arctic matters because melting ice is opening new ship routes and there are precious minerals underneath.

India already has a science station called Himadri in Svalbard and studies Arctic weather, which can affect India's monsoon rains.

Because the Arctic is warming more than twice as fast as the rest of the world, many countries want a say in what happens there.
