India's Foreign Investment Dynamics in 2025
In 2025, foreign investors pulled out some money from India's stock market due to high US interest rates and a weaker rupee.
This made Indian stocks less attractive compared to safer US investments.
However, long-term foreign investments and domestic investors, like mutual funds and retail investors, continued to support the market.
The Indian government and experts believe that as global conditions improve, foreign investment will return.
They also suggest that the rupee should be stabilized and stock prices should become more attractive to encourage more foreign investment.
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) withdrew nearly ₹1.59 lakh crore in 2025, the lowest since the pandemic.
Foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows rose 22% year-on-year to $25 billion in April-September 2025.
Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) and retail investors offset FPI outflows, buying shares worth nearly ₹1.2 for every rupee sold by FIIs.
India's inclusion in global bond indices attracted steady foreign demand for government securities.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) projects a stable current account deficit near 1% of GDP, with FDI and debt inflows comfortably financing it.
