Why India Suddenly Needs Sugar Imports as Prices Rise

Why India Suddenly Needs Sugar Imports as Prices Rise

India normally grows more sugar than it needs, but this year’s crop is smaller than expected.

Diseases and difficult weather damaged sugarcane in several important farming states.

People and food businesses also buy more sugar during festival and wedding seasons.

Because supplies have less extra cushion, prices rose quickly.

The government allowed up to 1 million tonnes of raw sugar to enter India without import duty.

It says this is a precaution to add supplies, not proof that the country has run out of sugar.

Some people blame the use of sugar products to make ethanol fuel.

The government disagrees, saying less sugar was diverted to ethanol and most ethanol now comes from grains.

Officials are also limiting stockpiling and encouraging mills to start crushing sugarcane earlier.
