Debate on Margin Trading's Role in Market Volatility
There's a big discussion about whether margin trading (where you borrow money to invest) is causing recent stock market ups and downs.
Ashish Nanda from Kotak Securities says no, because the data shows that margin trading actually increased a little during the market drop, and the total amount of margin trading is very small compared to the whole market.
He also says that the rules and controls in place make it less risky.
But Nithin Kamath from Zerodha thinks it's a problem because margin trading has grown a lot in the last few years, and there aren't good systems to manage the risks.
He worries that if the market drops a lot, people might have to sell their investments quickly, which could make the market even more unstable.
Ashish Nanda from Kotak Securities argues that MTF did not cause recent market declines, citing increased MTF book and low overall exposure.
Nithin Kamath from Zerodha warns that rapid MTF growth may outpace risk controls, highlighting potential for forced selling during market downturns.
MTF exposure is spread across over 2,000 stocks, with the highest exposure to any single stock at roughly ₹1,500 crore.
Margin requirements vary, with higher margins for mid- and small-cap stocks to curb leverage in volatile segments.
Regulations permit up to five times leverage on many stocks, with intense competition often pushing brokers to offer maximum leverage.
