From oxygen machine to cycling: life after a lung transplant

From oxygen machine to cycling: life after a lung transplant

Harpreet Singh's lungs were very sick for a long time.

He had asthma, a breathing problem, since he was a child, and it slowly got worse.

Eventually his lungs were so damaged that he had to stay in bed and breathe with the help of an oxygen machine.

His wife Simarjeet helped him bathe, eat, and get around.

Doctors at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram said the only way to help him was to give him new lungs from a donor.

On November 17, 2022, a team of 25 doctors performed the operation.

For a full year afterwards, Harpreet had to be very careful not to catch germs.

Now, four years later, he takes walks with his wife, rides his bicycle, works at his shop, and spends time with his grandson.

Many sick people in India need new lungs, but only a few healthy donor lungs are available.

Harpreet says every day he has now is a gift from God.
