White House Guest List Identifies Xi’s Longtime Security Aide
A man often seen near Chinese President Xi Jinping was known by his face but not by his name.
A White House guest list identified him as Zhou Hongxu.
The list said he is a major general in China’s military.
It also said he leads the Central Guard Bureau, which protects China’s top leaders.
Zhou has appeared near Xi at important meetings around the world.
He was seen at events in Bali, San Francisco and New Delhi.
Chinese authorities had not publicly explained who he was or confirmed his job.
One expert said Xi may be allowing Zhou to be seen more publicly.
The expert suggested this could point to greater responsibilities in the future.
Zhou Hongxu, a 55-year-old PLA major general, was identified on a White House state-banquet guest list.
The list described Zhou as director of China’s Central Guard Bureau and deputy director of the Communist Party’s General Office.
Zhou has repeatedly appeared near Xi Jinping at major meetings and overseas engagements, including gatherings in Bali, San Francisco and New Delhi.
The Central Guard Bureau protects China’s top leaders but is among the country’s least transparent security organisations.
Chinese official sources had not publicly named Zhou or confirmed his leadership of the bureau before the guest-list disclosure.
