Mahapanchayat opposes church construction in Gurugram
People in a village near Gurugram are upset because a church is being built on farmland.
They had a big meeting called a 'mahapanchayat' to talk about it.
The villagers and some Hindu groups, like the VHP and Bajrang Dal, don't want the church there.
They say there are very few Christian people in the area and they are worried the church might be used for something they don't like.
The villagers say they were promised no church would be built, but now it is.
They made a group of 52 people to talk to the local government leaders about it.
A 'mahapanchayat' was held in Teekli village, Gurugram, to oppose the construction of a church on a two-acre agricultural plot.
Villagers and leaders from the VHP and Bajrang Dal fear the church could be a front for religious conversion activities.
The local Christian population is reportedly less than 1 percent of the 10,000 Hindu families in the area.
Villagers claim they were assured no church would be built but construction has started nonetheless.
A 52-member committee was formed to meet the deputy commissioner and submit a memorandum to the chief minister.
