RBI Conducts ₹50,000 Crore VRR Auction to Boost Liquidity
Imagine the money in the bank is like water in a pool.
Sometimes there's too much (surplus), and sometimes there's not enough (shortage).
Recently, there was a little less money in the pool because of some money going out due to taxes.
To help, the RBI, which is like the lifeguard of the money pool, decided to add ₹50,000 crore, by conducting an auction.
Banks asked for more money than RBI offered.
This action shows that RBI is keeping the rules the same and is committed to their policy.
The money pool has been in surplus for a while.
RBI conducted a surprise VRR auction to infuse ₹50,000 crore into the banking system.
Banks bid ₹71,902 crore, with RBI accepting ₹50,001 crore at a weighted average rate of 5.58%.
The auction was prompted by GST-related outflows straining liquidity.
Expert noted that the action signals RBI's commitment to its current policy.
System liquidity was in surplus during June and July 2025, driven by higher government spending and other factors.
