Teen Presented AI Sanskrit–Chinese Phonology Paper at RegICON 2025
A 12th-grade student named Huma Abia Kanta presented a research paper at a big conference called RegICON 2025.
Her paper was about using artificial intelligence to study how Sanskrit and old Chinese languages sound alike.
She worked with two doctors to create a special computer program that can translate words from one language to another.
Huma's work was very important because it helps scholars understand old texts better.
She also started a project called desicodes to make coding easier in local languages like Assamese.
Huma is very thankful to her school and mentors for supporting her in doing this big research work.
Huma Abia Kanta, a Class XII student from Royal Global School (RGS), presented a technical paper on AI-driven Sanskrit–Chinese phonology at RegICON 2025.
Her paper proposes a sequence-to-sequence encoder–decoder architecture with Luong attention for reconstructing Sanskrit phonology from Tang-era Chinese Buddhist lexicon entries.
The study was co-authored with Dr. Ankur Pan Saikia and Dr. Utpal Barman and featured in regular sessions alongside faculty and researchers.
Huma has also founded desicodes, an open-source initiative that enables coding in Assamese and other Northeastern languages through an Assamese-to-Python transpiler called asPy.
She expressed gratitude to her school and mentors for supporting her research and encouraging her to explore complex topics beyond the school curriculum.
