Navi Pillay Wins 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for International Justice

Navi Pillay is a South African lawyer and judge who has worked to protect people’s rights.

She won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for efforts to promote peace and international law.

Pillay was born in Durban in 1941.

In 1995, she became the first Black woman to serve as a judge on South Africa’s High Court.

Earlier, she defended people who opposed apartheid and spoke out against the mistreatment of political detainees.

She later worked as a judge at an international tribunal and held roles at the International Criminal Court and the United Nations.

Her work at the Rwanda tribunal helped establish that rape can be used as an act of genocide and is a crime against humanity.
