Trump drone tariffs leave India out of preferential trade club

Trump drone tariffs leave India out of preferential trade club

The United States buys a lot of drones and drone parts from other countries.

The US government worries that some imported drones could be unsafe or might send information back to the people who made them.

To protect itself, the president signed a new rule that charges extra money, called tariffs, on drones made in other countries.

Some friendly countries were given a special deal, so their drones only get a small extra charge.

India was not given that special deal, so drones made in India could get an extra charge of up to 100 percent, meaning they could cost twice as much.

Big drones, drones with special cameras that see heat, and drone docking stations get the biggest extra charge.

Smaller, simpler drones get a smaller extra charge of 25 percent.

The new charges start on September 3.

Companies that build drone factories in America can skip the extra charges while their factories are being built.

This is supposed to help America make more of its own drones instead of depending on other countries.
