Cornell Case Prompts Mother to Discuss Speaking Up

Cornell Case Prompts Mother to Discuss Speaking Up

Nalini Sorensen read about an alleged sexual assault case connected to Cornell University.

It made her worry about how young men respond when they see others behaving cruelly or dangerously.

She asked her two sons what they would do if they saw violent messages about an unconscious woman in a group chat.

Both said they would not simply ignore it, although they reacted in different ways.

They also talked about how people might mistake serious messages for jokes or nonsense.

Sorensen says it is important to ask for help or step in when someone may be unsafe.

She believes parents should keep having honest conversations with their children as they grow up.

She says silence can also be a choice with consequences.
