Panel flags US deportations of Indian immigrants
A group in the Indian government called the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs is worried about the US sending back Indian immigrants who are in the country illegally.
They think the government should handle this situation with more kindness and respect for the people being sent back.
The committee also mentioned that over 2,300 Indians have been rescued from countries like Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos, where they were being forced to do illegal work.
The government said they will think about the committee's suggestions but also explained that it's the responsibility of each country to take back its own citizens who are living illegally in another country.
The committee also suggested that the government should help these people adjust back to life in India.
A parliamentary panel expressed concern over the deportation of illegal Indian immigrants from the US and probable mass deportations in the future.
The panel urged the government to handle the situation with a more empathetic approach, upholding the human rights of migrants.
Over 2,300 Indians have been rescued from Southeast Asia, where they were lured into illegal activities by dubious firms.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has taken note of the panel's recommendations and stated that the responsibility of reintegration rests with the respective state governments.
The panel also recommended specific re-integration programs for returning migrants and advised PIO cardholders to convert to OCI cards by December 31, 2025.
