Sabyasachi Returns to New York With Bengal Byzantine Broadway
Sabyasachi Mukherjee is a fashion designer from Kolkata, India.
He returned to New York Fashion Week with a collection called Bengal Byzantine Broadway.
The show had 72 different outfits for the Spring/Summer 2027 season.
Many outfits used jeans, denim jackets, plaid, cowboy hats and long coats.
Indian craftsmanship appeared in the embroidery, beadwork, quilting and jewellery.
Christy Turlington opened the show wearing several denim pieces with large jewellery.
The jewellery included designs inspired by Byzantine, Mediterranean and Mughal history.
Sabyasachi wanted to show that India is modern and creative, not defined only by familiar images such as elephants and peacocks.
The collection also introduced a major jewellery collaboration with New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Sabyasachi Mukherjee presented his 72-look Bengal Byzantine Broadway collection at New York Fashion Week on 15 September.
The Spring/Summer 2027 show marked his return to New York after his last runway presentation there in 2009.
The collection combined denim, plaid, cowboy hats and Western tailoring with Indian embroidery, beadwork, quilting and jewelled motifs.
Christy Turlington opened the show in layered denim and Sabyasachi High Jewellery, while Rani Mukerji and Poorna Jagannathan attended.
The runway debuted jewellery from Sabyasachi’s multi-year collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art and reflected the brand’s expanding United States presence.
