India Seeks Tariff Advantage Before Finalizing United States Trade Deal

India and the United States are working on a trade deal.

India wants its goods to face lower tariffs than goods from competing countries before it signs the final agreement.

Minister Piyush Goyal said India had protected important areas such as farming, fishing and small businesses.

An earlier plan would have lowered tariffs on Indian goods from 50% to 18%.

However, the deal became uncertain after a United States court rejected President Donald Trump’s global tariffs.

Trump then said tariffs would rise from 10% to 15%, although it was unclear when that change would begin.

Goyal also said India’s economy grew 7.8% in one quarter.

The Congress disagreed with how those economic figures were presented.
