Assam Floods: 80 Dead, 2.12 Lakh Affected, Six-Month Loan Moratorium
In Assam, India, heavy rains caused big floods that have killed 80 people and left more than 2.1 million people in trouble.
The state government said it will stop all loan payments for six months for people in the worst-hit districts.
The chief minister also asked the national government for extra help and wants the floods to be treated as a special, sudden disaster.
Relief teams are working in 112 camps and helping about 75,000 people.
The government is also asking banks to extend loan terms up to seven years and give extra money to shop owners whose businesses were destroyed.
Death toll from Assam floods rises to 80, with two recent fatalities in Sivasagar district.
Over 2.12 lakh people in eight districts, including Charaideo, Sivasagar, and Jorhat, remain affected.
Assam government imposes a six‑month moratorium on all loan repayments for residents in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma requests a central support package and recognition of the floods as an “atypical, high‑intensity, rapid‑onset event.”
Relief operations include 112 camps housing about 75,000 people, with Army, NDRF, and other agencies involved.
