Delhi Govt Drops Action on CJP Protesters, Excludes Repeat Offenders
The Delhi government said it will not press charges against people who joined a protest by the Cockroach Janta Party, except for those who already have criminal records.
The police had filed 13 complaints about violence during the protest on July 20.
The order says that if anyone was already arrested, the police will review the arrest and release them quickly.
The government is following a Supreme Court order that protects most protesters but allows action against repeat offenders.
This means most protest participants can move on without legal trouble, but those with past crimes will still face the law.
The decision is meant to end the legal fight over the protest.
It also keeps the police from taking further action against the protestors.
The government wants to show it is listening to the protest demands.
The Supreme Court had earlier said the police should not use excessive force.
The order is a step toward closing the case.
Delhi government orders police not to pursue further legal action against most CJP protesters.
13 FIRs were registered by Delhi Police for violence during the 'Chalo Sansad' march on July 20.
The order excludes individuals with criminal antecedents, who will still face action.
Arrests already made will be reviewed and released expeditiously.
The decision follows a Supreme Court directive that protects protesters but allows action against repeat offenders.
