BigBasket’s Quick-Commerce Pivot Drives Losses, Market Share Decline
BigBasket is a grocery delivery company in India that tried to sell groceries faster, like a quick delivery service.
They spent a lot of money building new stores and delivery centers, but their sales didn’t grow enough to cover the costs.
Their losses went up a lot in 2026, and they now have only about 5% of the market, while rivals like Blinkit and Zepto have much bigger shares.
BigBasket is cutting back to about 40 cities and focusing on big stores to try to make each delivery cheaper.
Experts say the market is very competitive and it’s hard to get outside money, so BigBasket needs to get more customers and sell more items to become profitable.
BigBasket’s FY26 losses rose 66% YoY to Rs 3,073 crore while revenue grew only 7.7% to Rs 8,223 crore.
The company’s rapid investment in dark stores and fulfilment infrastructure has yet to translate into top‑line growth, leaving it with a 5% market share versus Blinkit’s 45%.
BigBasket is trimming its footprint from 76 to about 40 cities and focusing on 700 large‑format dark stores to improve unit economics.
Competition has intensified with rivals like Zepto waiving delivery fees above Rs 99 and Amazon Now and Flipkart Minutes entering the market with aggressive pricing.
Industry experts warn that the quick‑commerce environment offers limited room for external funding and that higher‑capacity stores only pay off when demand is high.
