Navi Mumbai Adopts Scientific Tree Management SOP
Navi Mumbai had a lot of trees fall during heavy rains and strong winds in July.
The city officials and tree experts had a meeting to figure out why this happened.
They found out that too much concrete around trees, digging for cables and pipes, and cutting tree branches the wrong way made the trees weak.
They also found that some trees are more likely to fall because of how they grow.
Now, the city plans to take better care of the trees by cutting them the right way before the rainy season and using special tools to check if trees are safe.
This will help keep people safe and keep the city green.
Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to implement a scientific SOP for tree management after recent tree falls.
Excessive concretisation, root damage, and improper pruning identified as primary causes of tree falls.
Certain tree species like Ficus, Gulmohar, and Copperpod are more susceptible to damage.
NMMC to manage tree crowns, ensure balanced pruning, and use advanced technologies for risk assessment.
Measures to be taken before the monsoon season to improve public safety and conserve green cover.

Urban Development Priorities
Environmental Conservation
Concretisation vs. Tree Health
Urban Development Priorities
Urban development requires concretisation for infrastructure, which is necessary for housing and road construction.
Environmental Conservation
Excessive concretisation harms tree roots, making trees more susceptible to falling during storms.
Tree Pruning Methods
Urban Development Priorities
Pruning from one side or the top is quicker and more cost-effective for housing societies.
Environmental Conservation
Improper pruning leaves trees structurally imbalanced and more vulnerable during storms.
