Calcutta University Considers Changing PG Admission Criteria
Calcutta University is asking its departments if they want to change how they admit students to master's programs.
Right now, 80% of the seats are filled based on the student's marks, and the other 20% require an admission test.
The university wants to know if the departments think they should also use admission tests for the 80% of seats reserved for students from the university.
They also want to know how to handle students who finish a three-year undergraduate program and want to join a two-year master's program starting in August 2026.
Some people think admission tests are better than just looking at marks.
The departments have to give their opinion within a week.
Some colleges under the university already use admission tests for their master's programs.
Calcutta University is seeking opinions from departments on whether to use admission tests or marks-based system for PG admissions.
Currently, 80% of PG seats are reserved for university students based on marks, and 20% are filled through admission tests for students from other universities.
Departments have been asked to submit their opinions within a week.
The university is also considering how to admit students who exit a four-year undergraduate program after the third year and enroll in a two-year PG program starting in August 2026.
Some departments believe admission tests are more effective than marks in selecting bright students for PG programs.
