Sensex climbs 374 points, Nifty flat in mixed D-St session
A stock market is a place where people buy and sell small parts of big companies, called shares.
In India, the Sensex and the Nifty are like big scoreboards that track many important companies at once.
On Thursday, these two scoreboards ended the day differently from each other.
The Sensex went up by about 374 points, while the Nifty stayed almost exactly where it started.
One reason the market felt steady was that the price of oil, which many businesses need, went down.
Also, people were buying shares in two big companies, Reliance Industries and ICICI Bank.
Since Monday, the stock exchanges have been using a new way of setting the closing price for some shares, called the Closing Auction Session.
This new system seems to be one reason the Sensex and Nifty no longer move in the same way.
An expert said the difference is because big investors send more of their orders to the companies in the Nifty than to those in the Sensex.
Even with all that, investors stayed cautiously hopeful about a peaceful end to the Middle East conflict.
The Sensex rose 373.76 points, or 0.48 per cent, to settle at 78,954.76 on Thursday.
The Nifty ended nearly flat, edging up just 11.35 points, or 0.05 per cent, to 24,636.
Cooling crude oil prices and buying in heavyweights Reliance Industries and ICICI Bank supported the market.
Since Monday, the Sensex and Nifty have shown divergence following the launch of the new Closing Auction Session (CAS) for F&O stocks.
Analyst Hariselvan Radhakrishnan said the divergence reflects differences in market liquidity rather than a transitional anomaly.

Cause of Sensex-Nifty divergence since CAS launch
Transitional Anomaly View
The divergence between the Sensex and the Nifty is a temporary, transitional anomaly caused by the newly introduced Closing Auction Session.
Structural Liquidity View
Four sessions into the CAS, the divergence reflects structural differences in market liquidity, because institutional order flow is concentrated more heavily in Nifty constituents, making the Nifty more sensitive to auction-driven price discovery.
