Haryana Approves Handover of ITO Barrage to Delhi
Imagine a big gate on the river Yamuna called the ITO Barrage.
It helps control the water flow and prevent floods in Delhi.
Right now, the government of Haryana manages this gate.
But the Delhi government wants to take over to better handle floods.
After recent heavy rains and flooding, Haryana has agreed to let Delhi take control.
This means Delhi will now manage two important gates.
The change should allow Delhi to respond faster to future floods.
The ITO Barrage was originally built to help power plants.
Haryana gave in-principle approval to hand over the ITO barrage to Delhi.
The decision follows flooding in Delhi and a joint meeting between states.
Delhi requested control in July to improve flood management response.
Five gates of the barrage were jammed during the 2023 floods.
Delhi government will now manage the ITO and Wazirabad barrages.
