Bombay HC Orders ₹25 Lakh Compensation After Assault on NMMC Officer
A lady who worked for the city government in Navi Mumbai was hurt by a crowd while she was doing her job.
The government wanted to take down buildings that were built without permission.
Many people got upset and surrounded the government workers.
The police were there but did not step in to help.
The lady was expecting a baby, and sadly she lost the baby.
A very important court called the Bombay High Court said this was not okay.
The court said the government must give her ₹25 lakh — a very large amount of money — to help her.
The court also said the police officers who did not protect her should be punished.
The court said police must always keep government workers safe when they are doing their jobs.
The Bombay High Court ordered the Maharashtra government to pay ₹25 lakh compensation to an NMMC officer allegedly assaulted during a July 30 demolition drive in Navi Mumbai.
The officer, who was pregnant, allegedly suffered a miscarriage after being manhandled by an agitated mob.
The court directed the Director General of Police to take stern legal action against police personnel present at the site who failed to intervene.
The court said the compensation amount could be recovered from the salaries of the police personnel who failed to prevent the assault.
The court also ordered Navi Mumbai police to provide free round-the-clock protection to another NMMC staffer who is receiving threats.
