Forest Dept. to Bombay HC: 10-Year-Old Elephant 'Omkar' Needs Vantara Training
Imagine a young elephant named Omkar who got lost from his family.
He's been wandering around farms, eating crops and fruits, which isn't good for him or the people who grow the food.
The government's animal experts told a judge that Omkar is still too young to live all by himself in the wild.
So, they want to send him to a special place called Vantara in Gujarat.
This place is like a big elephant school where they will train him and take care of him until he's ready.
They believe this will help Omkar grow up healthy and prevent any problems between elephants and people.
Maharashtra Forest Department told the Bombay High Court it's impossible to rehabilitate a 10-year-old elephant, Omkar, in the wild.
The department plans to shift Omkar from Sindhudurg district to Vantara in Gujarat for training due to his immature age.
Omkar was previously seen roaming in North Goa and Sindhudurg, damaging paddy fields and foraging for food.
The decision to capture and relocate Omkar is based on Section 11 of The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
The move is intended to be in the elephant's best interest and to mitigate human-wildlife conflict.
