Pipeline Tender Delays Linked to Indore Water Tragedy

Pipeline Tender Delays Linked to Indore Water Tragedy

A judicial panel investigated illnesses and deaths in Bhagirathpura after people drank contaminated water.

It said old and damaged pipelines should have been replaced sooner.

Some tender and construction processes were delayed by as much as 859 days.

The panel said red tape and poor administration helped cause the problem.

Tests found harmful bacteria, including E. coli, in the water.

Residents became sick with vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration.

Contaminated water reportedly continued being supplied after the outbreak became known.

Residents and the Opposition Congress said 36 people died, but official records listed 35 deaths, with 22 possibly connected to the water.

The panel recommended investigations and possible legal action against responsible officials and contractors.
