Bangladesh Weighs Attending BRICS Summit in India
Bangladesh’s new Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman, has been invited by India to go to a big meeting called the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
The Bangladesh government is thinking about whether to accept because they have other trips planned, like the UN meeting in New York.
India’s ambassador to Bangladesh said they would be happy to welcome the Bangladeshi leader.
Bangladesh also has some problems with India, like a former prime minister staying in India and border worries.
Some people in Bangladesh think going to the summit could help the country join BRICS, but others worry it might look bad to voters.
So the decision is still being discussed.
Bangladesh is reviewing Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s invitation from India to attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman said the government is considering the invitation alongside other international commitments, such as the UN General Assembly.
India’s High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi expressed eagerness to welcome Bangladesh’s head of government and reaffirmed a constructive partnership.
Bangladesh’s decision is influenced by unresolved bilateral irritants, including the status of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and border security concerns.
Analysts note that attending the BRICS summit could advance Bangladesh’s aspirations for full membership while also being scrutinized by domestic political parties and public opinion.
