Why India and Pakistan Celebrate Independence Day One Day Apart

A long time ago, Britain ruled over a huge region that later became India and Pakistan.

In August 1947, Britain gave up power, and two new countries were born.

The law that created them said both would become free on August 15.

But Pakistan celebrates its birthday on August 14 instead.

That is because Pakistan's special ceremony was held first, in the city of Karachi.

A British leader named Lord Mountbatten had to attend ceremonies in both Karachi and New Delhi, so the events were held one day apart.

He also chose August 15 partly because it was the anniversary of Japan's surrender in World War II.

At midnight, India's leader Jawaharlal Nehru gave a famous speech called 'Tryst with Destiny' and raised India's flag at the Red Fort.

Some people also point to religion, because the night of August 14-15, 1947 was a holy night for Muslims.

So India and Pakistan share the same story of freedom but celebrate it on two different days.
