Haldwani Purification Ritual Sparks Opposition Outcry, BJP Counters Appeasement Charges
A political disagreement has started over a ceremony called shuddhikaran, or purification, in Haldwani.
The ceremony allegedly happened after Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge spoke at a rally there.
Opposition leaders said the act was insulting and went against the Constitution.
They also asked why local authorities had not acted.
A complaint led to a Zero FIR being registered in Bengaluru.
BJP leaders said the ceremony was actually connected to prayers before a BJP event.
They said Congress was wrongly connecting it to Kharge’s rally for political reasons.
The two sides therefore disagree about both the meaning of the ceremony and whether it was linked to the Congress meeting.
Opposition parties condemned the alleged purification ritual held at Haldwani’s Ramlila Ground after Mallikarjun Kharge’s rally.
Congress and RJD leaders called the ritual an insult to Dalits, public representatives, and constitutional values.

The BJP said the ritual was part of customary prayers before its event and unrelated to the Congress rally.
