US Approves Nvidia H200 Chip Exports to China with Conditions
The U.S. government has approved the sale of Nvidia's H200 AI chips to China, but with some rules.
The chips must be tested by a third party to confirm their capabilities, and China can't buy more than half of what Nvidia sells in the U.S. Chinese buyers also need to show they have good security and won't use the chips for military purposes.
Nvidia says this is a good balance for American business.
However, some people are worried that these chips could help China's military and make it harder for the U.S. to stay ahead in AI.
Chinese companies have already ordered over 2 million of these chips, which cost about $27,000 each.
The U.S. will also take a 25% fee from these sales.
The U.S. approved the export of Nvidia's H200 AI chips to China with conditions.
Chips must be tested by a third party and China cannot receive more than 50% of total sales to U.S. customers.
Chinese buyers must demonstrate sufficient security procedures and cannot use the chips for military purposes.
Nvidia has received orders for over 2 million H200 chips from Chinese technology companies.
The decision drew criticism from China hawks concerned about military use and U.S. AI advantage erosion.

National Security
Pro-Export Stance
The products aren’t as good as Nvidia’s best hardware and won’t push China ahead of the U.S. in the AI race.
China Hawks
The new rules illustrate the security risks inherent in approving the exports and that following them to the letter of the law might mean no shipments get approved.
Military Use
Pro-Export Stance
Chinese buyers must demonstrate sufficient security procedures and cannot use the chips for military purposes.
China Hawks
Security guarantees could prove toothless given those companies have been linked to the Chinese military.
