Raj Thackeray Calls New UPI Fee a Digital Trap

Raj Thackeray Calls New UPI Fee a Digital Trap

Raj Thackeray is protesting a new fee connected to some UPI payments.

The fee is called a Merchant Discount Rate, or MDR.

The article says it would be 0.4% for selected transactions above Rs 2,000.

Thackeray says people were encouraged to use digital payments because they were free.

He believes the government is now charging people after they became used to UPI.

The government says the fee would be paid by merchants, but Thackeray says businesses may pass the cost to customers.

He also criticised an 18% GST applied to the MDR.

He wants traders and shop owners to oppose the new charge.
